This was unexpected.

Are the first batch of gen 1 RX8s rubbish or is living with a rotary that much of a pain? I really didn't expect this car to be so cheap across the board.

Well, judging by the short descriptions I see there, those particular RX-8s have problems...

The first two at least look like their engines blew.

Owners probably didn't expect a rotary to explode after 80.000 miles, like they always do.

Cats get clogged and engines loose compression, and no one wants to spend $4-$5000 to fix them.

Depends on how they're treated. Some did loose compression, had excessive carbon buildup, etc. Others get flooded and fuel hydrolocked due to lack of awareness. Mazda also had some fuel pump issues and something something about running lean.

There were lots of software updates and a starting system fix too iirc. All were mostly fixed with service bulletins. However, knowing how to take care of one is vital. We put 50,000 miles on our 2004 and the only thing that failed was an o2 sensor.

If' I had money spare I'd take the 1st one and get an LS swap on the go

How good is the rear leg room btw?

Minimal, like any 2+2 sports car. I'm only 5'5" and fit OK. The full length center console also cuts into your "comfort zone".

To answer your question, yes. A high mileage RX8 is not a thing commonly confused with a good buy.

They're pretty easy to ruin, so it doesn't surprise me.

I have just the answer.

Buy one of those and swap in a LS motor and you would have an absolutely killer car for about 10K. I've always loved the look of the RX8 they were just a mechanical nightmare.

Yes, they suck. Rotaries just aren't reliable/fuel efficient/powerful/nice sounding/etc etc. Best friend's brother has one, and it's always breaking down.
